Modifiying excisiting speakers

So far, we mostly sell TWARON Angel Hair for new speakers. However, there is a lot to gain in excisiting (about any) speakers as well. Check f.e. the "Reports of modification page".  What to do?

Take out the woofer(s) and/or cone midranges if you can, best in just one speaker first, in order to find out THAT  this modifying really works. If you are able to disconnect the units, do it to avoid damage to wiring or speaker connections. Make sure you write down the connections before disconnecting, saves a lot of trouble.... )))   After the units are removed (if possible) check what kind of damping material is used and find our opinion about them below.

GLASSWOOL used
The first material used was glasswool, used in older boxes from a time that nothing else was available. This material is about totally unsuitable as damping material, it hardly does anything and has a very limited frequency range and damping factor.....
Take out everything you can, because it can even harm your woofers due to FOD (foreign object damage) as small glass particles in the woofer gap. Make sure to vacuum clean the cabinet internal before replacing anything!

BAF used
In most of the speakers this BAF is used. Mostly it is a white, quite stiff material and looks like cottonwool, but is much stiffer, actually to stiff for this purpose. In this case you can win a LOT, especially if you can take out this material easily. BAF is the most used material, not because it is the best, but because it is cheap and easy to handle. It only has a limited frequency range with low damping factor. Take out all the BAF you can without to much fuzz and leave what is glued or unreachable.

EGGFOAM used
Eggfoam is used a lot. This material is cheap and only suitable for lowrange damping and spreading reflecting sounds. Unfortunatelly this eggfoam is mostly glued to the walls, so leave it then, because it does no harm either. Just remove all (and other) damping if possible.

SHEEPWOOL used
Especcially in more expensive speakers sheepwool is used, simply because "it is better then BAF and you pay al lot for this speaker....". Unfortunatelly it only works in lower frequency ranges and is way to stiff for use in midrange chambers. Take out all you can.

Dr. Bailey's LONGHAIR used
This material is favourite in the upper half of transmissionline systems. Like sheepwool it only works in the lower range and so, a lot of midrange passes and leaves the pipe unwanted. For years this was the best material available for this purpose. Take out all you can.

OTHER materials used
Since there are a lot of "niche" materials available it is hard to explain all of them. Take out all you can and save it for the unlike case that our TWARON Angel Hair and/or Unicorn Tail is NOT functioning better.....

MODIFY by listening
Now you have taken out all the older damping materials you can start with replacing it by our TWARON Angel Hair. Modify by doing an A/B test and fill one speaker some more then the other or even better, modify just ONE speaker first. In that case you immediatelly WILL experience that this is an interesting material. Listen, modify and listen, modify and........till you reach the sound you think is best.

MODIFY by measurement
Most people believe that if frequency curve is completely flat and waterfall decay is hardly measurable they have the perfect speaker. WRONG......! In that case you have a total liveless, total unmusical speaker as we hear too much today. Besides the fact that the (mostly difficult) crossovers cause a lot of phase problems (bad 3D), most of those speakers are completely "dead", just bringing the sound in good order, but musicality (goosepimples, tears, etc.) is totally gone. Just use measurements as help, not as final goal. USE YOUR EARS, BODY and MIND !  This is also the way we design our ELTIM DIY kits.  BUT: if you want, you CAN make it a complete flat speaker and kill about all decays with our TWARON Angel Hair..... Then you lack the speed, pace and rythm and fun of listening in our opinion and gone just too far, BUT measurements will be perfect......

RECCOMENDATIONS
Sealed speakers:
- Woofer chamber: loose fill the entire chamber with TWARON Angel Hair and start with following amounts:
3-10 grams per liter, so 5 grams would be a good start.
- Midrange chamber: loose fill the entire chamber with TWARON Angel Hair and start with following amounts:
6-15 grams per liter, so 10 grams would be a good start.

Vented (ported) speakers:
- In 2-way systems:
  - Woofer chamber: loose fill the space behind the woofer making sure the TWARON cannot sink to the bottom of the cabinet by placing some stick, etc. below the woofer first if neccessary. Then fill with TWARON Angel Hair and start with following amounts:
      4" woofer -15g   5" woofer -20g    6" woofer -25g    8" woofer -35g, etc.
Make sure that the port area stays open.

- In multiway systems:
  - Woofer chamber: loose fill the space behind the woofer making sure the TWARON cannot sink to the bottom of the cabinet by placing some stick, etc. below the woofer first if neccessary. Then fill with TWARON Angel Hair and start with following amounts:
      4" woofer -15g   5" woofer -20g    6" woofer -25g    8" woofer -35g, etc.
Make sure that the port area stays open if there is any.
  - Midrange chamber: loose fill the entire chamber with TWARON Angel Hair and start with following amounts:
6-15 grams per liter, so 10 grams would be a good start.

- In Transmissionline systems:
  - Woofer chamber: loose fill the space behind the woofer with following amounts:
      4" woofer -15g   5" woofer -20g    6" woofer -25g    8" woofer -35g, etc.
  - Midrange chamber(s): loose fill the entire chamber with TWARON Angel Hair and start with following amounts:
6-15 grams per liter, so 10 grams would be a good start.
  - First half of transmission line, loose fill with our TWARON Unicorn Tail, especially developed to damp midrange frequencies and leave (ultra)low range untouched.

TIP:
Use your most favourite track for testing in A/B comparison you believe you know completely and be surprised what you didn't hear all those years!
GOOD LUCK and enjoy your music even more, especially in awareness, speed and fine detail......
Don't forget to tell your friends (and us) that it really DOES work.
